Data & How it Works
What does an athlete’s Rating impact?
Athletes are rated from 1-99, with 50 being average. Their rating influences:
Position ranking (e.g., QB1 vs. QB2)
Peer value
Recommendation value
How should I rate my athletes?
Rate your athletes relative to your competition. If you're in the SEC, ask yourself: How does this athlete compare to other SEC players at their position? Your ratings help define your own depth chart and guide smart budgeting.
What are the Recommendations on the Sports & Positions page and Athletes page based on?
Sports & Positions page: The Recommendation is calculated based on a benchmark percentage multiplied by the team cap.
Athletes page: The Recommendation is a weighted calculation using factors such as the athlete's position rank, benchmark percentages, and the position cap. Taken together, the Recommendations are a suggestion on how to spend 100% of each position cap on your depth chart.
How do Benchmarks work?
When you select a benchmark—like SEC, Big Ten, Power 4, or Division I—you’re telling Team Builder:
“Show me how programs at this level typically allocate their budget.”
The Team % and Position % columns show how teams at that level distribute spending across their roster and within each position’s depth chart.
What is the Peer value on the Athletes page?
Peer value is determined by the athlete’s rating and the selected benchmark. It tells you the typical earnings for an athlete similar to the one you're reviewing.
Do I need to change my ratings when I change my benchmark?
No. Your athlete ratings are based on your internal evaluation—how your players stack up within your team and conference.
The benchmark provides external context, showing how similar programs allocate funds. Changing the benchmark doesn't require changing your ratings—it just gives you a new lens through which to evaluate spend.
If you’re curious what your athletes might be worth in another conference or level of play, you can:
Adjust the benchmark to see different Peer Values and Position %s. You may want to adjust your athlete rating here.
Or run a Market Intel report to get detailed, position-by-position compensation snapshot by conference.
Why does some data disappear on the Athletes page when I select an NFL benchmark?
When selecting an NFL benchmark, Peer value disappears because NFL salaries do not correlate with college budgets. Some Team and Position benchmarks may also disappear if the selected NFL team doesn’t have depth in that position.
What does the Include checkbox do on the Athletes page?
The checkbox includes the athlete in the budget. By default, athletes are included. Excluding them impacts the available cap space and may affect teammates' recommendations.
What does the Annual Increase impact on the Forecast page?
It affects both the annual cap space and the projected salary for athletes year over year.
Why are some of the years blank for athletes on the Forecast page?
Forecasted earnings are tied to the athlete’s class year. Missing data typically reflects the athlete's progression through their academic years.
